<image:caption>After ten years of discussion, planning and the construction of five new bridges, Leiden has opened its unique never-ending park. It’s finally possible to continuously walk the 6 km-long green canal-ring surrounding the city center, making it the longest city park in Holland. The Singelpark is the result of a successful, long-lasting collaboration between the citizens of Leiden and its municipality. Disguised as tourists we took a tour and found out why this is such a unique initiative.</image:caption>

<image:title>Vlogs - VLOG‍♂️ || South America's traffic light performers.</image:title>
<image:caption>Every morning millions of people buckle up to start the day completely jammed in rush hour. In South America, this huge urban challenge also created new opportunities for remarkable businesses to flourish. In big cities like Bogota, you can find many young men, claiming crowded junctions to create a unique public stage. They are called ‘traffic light performers’: skilled athletes who earn a living by entertaining grumpy drivers waiting at the traffic lights.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In four days, hundreds of people from all over the world created their own small society in a tropical no man’s land somewhere in the northeast of Brazil. Without really knowing what we got ourselves into, The Urban Detectives bought tickets, jumped in the car with some fellow ‘burners’ and started our Tropical Burn adventure.</image:caption>

<image:title>Vlogs - VLOG‍♂️ || How the Brazilian carnival's band Olodum became a massive social movement</image:title>
<image:caption>Every year, more than two million people come to Salvador to be part of Brazil’s biggest festival. However, forty years ago most Afro-Brazilians living in Pelourinho - the historic city center of Salvador - were not allowed to participate. To guarantee them access to the festival, a group of musicians and artists founded Olodum: a carnival organisation that aimed to highlight African heritage during the massive yearly parades, and uplift the Afro-Brazilian community of Pelourinho through music, art and dance. The Urban Detectives are in Pelourinho, to see the local heroes of Olodum open a renovated plaza and find out what they exactly mean for the city.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Urban Detective visits Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, in the Northeast region of Brazil. Recife is famous for its bridges, dikes, and other elements of the Dutch heritage. But on our way to the Recife city museum we discover the consequences of Brazil's rainy season. Ironically, history comes back to life, as the city streets are completely flooded and transform into Dutch looking canals.</image:caption>

<image:caption>More than 70% of Rio de Janeiro's sewage flows into the Guanabara Bay untreated! In addition, illegally dumped industrial trash and oil spills continue to pollute the bay’s waters. Instituto Mar Urbano is fighting for change. Their goal is to preserve and protect the maritime biodiversity of the Guanabara Bay, and make people aware of the rich life in its waters. “You have to know the bay, to love and protect it,” founder Ricardo Gomez explains. We join founder Ricardo Gomes and other bay protectors during a big beach clean-up and immediately discover the importance of their work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Every Sunday, Avenida Paulista - one of the most crowded roads in Sao Paulo - transforms into a huge city park. On this day, the streets are taken over by families, skaters, runners and cyclists. Paulistas can enjoy live music, stroll around markets and of course Brazilian snacks can be found everywhere. It’s the perfect time to catch your breath before it’s business as usual and Paulista transforms back into one of the busiest streets of São Paulo.</image:caption>

<image:title>Photo's - How to make a good public square?</image:title>
<image:caption>Honestly, in the Netherlands I really miss good quality squares. Public spaces that invite us to play, to exercise or to just let us hang around and meet each other. We have good parks, that people completely occupy when the first ray of sunshine reminds us winter is finally over. But squares? Whether it is incredibly hard to design them or we just really love grass, we don't seem to use them. In South America they love squares. And we've seen some beautiful examples. Spaces where we often met friendly locals, who gladly guided the Urban Detectives in the right direction.</image:caption>

<image:title>Photo's - The ultimate beach in Brazil!</image:title>
<image:caption>With a coastline of more than 8000 kilometers long, Brazil is the perfect beach holiday destination . Our favorite spot: Pipa. This old fishermen village has transformed into a relaxation paradise where you can surf ‍♀️ swim with dolphins or drink (lots of) caipirinhas. But the increasing amount of tourists also raised the amount of trash around Pipa's beautiful beaches. Local artist Rafa Santos has a perfect part of the solution. His arty cigaretteboxes really get your attention, but still fit perfectly in Pipa's sunny vibe .</image:caption>

<image:title>Photo's - Getting around in South-America.</image:title>
<image:caption>When traveling through South-America, you will use a lot of different types of transportation. Cruising through Sao Paulo by (shared) bike on Sundays, crossing the Brazilian-Colombian border by boot on the Amazon, or getting around on the back of a pre-second world war truck in Colombia’s coffee region. In each place, people have adapted their transportation system differently. People move around in innovative and sometimes problematic ways to cope with their growing population, urbanizing environment and beautiful, but challenging landscape.</image:caption>

In fact, the number of fire outbreaks in Brazil grew by 70 percent this year in comparison to the same period of 2018. The government denies the claims and has fired the scientist responsible for publishing the data. In response, #prayforamazonia became trending. The top-notch grafitti, amazing view and street-art performances attract hundreds of tourists every day. How come this transformation? Social Urbanism! Together with the community, a metro cable and six outdoor escalators were realised to connect this area to the rest of the city. These projects can be found throughout the entire city. To bridge the 72 meters gap between the two sides of town, connecting Pelourinho (upstairs) with the commercial district (downstairs), elevators were built. Elevador Lacerda is being used since 1873 and is centrally located between municipality buildings & churches in Pelourinho and the Mercado Modelo and shops downstairs.
