Welcome. Karibu.

Bem vindo.

Every week, a stunning 1.5 million people migrate to cities all over the world. 1.5 million! Can you imagine?

The Urban Detective investigates everything that has to do with this worldwide migration to- and clustering of people in cities. I am travelling the world to find out more about the challenges and opportunities us urbanites face.

There is a huge housing shortage in the Netherlands. In addition, the space to build is limited. Redeveloping existing space in the city is becoming increasingly important. Developers, civil servants, architects and other urban professionals are currently laying the foundation for lots of new places within old cities. Places that already possess a rich history, social structures and of course: residents.

The knowledge and experiences of local residents stands at the core of a good and well-supported future-plan. But how do you gain insight in that local information? And how do you make sure something actually happens with it? That's the job of the Urban Detective🔍.

We are joining forces with Kickstad to capture local dreams, worries and ideas on camera. We provide appealing neighbourhood videos for urban planners at the start of a (re)development project. The videos illustrate the power of a place as the foundation for future development.

What does an Urban Detective do?

Urban Detectives explore the neighbourhood with a camera and microphone in search of its DNA.

1. We approach and talk to the local residents on the street: Who are they? What's going on in their neighbourhood? What are their worries and dreams?

2. We interview relevant stakeholders such as the local police officer, the neighbourhood association and local entrepreneurs.

3. We collect ideas about the way in which your future plan can connect well with the wishes and needs of the local people.

4. We bundle all knowledge and experiences and proces them into a short neighbourhood movie.

The result is a short, appealing video that illustrate the power of a place as the foundation for future developments. Also they can serve as the start of a successful participation process.

For whom is the Urban Detective interesting?

The Urban Detective is interesting for all urban professionals who are at the start of a (re)development project in the city. For example in the situations below:

  • A developer participates in a tender procedure in which the involvement of the neighbourhood is an important condition.

  • A housing corporation wants to investigate the best way to tackle a renovation or ‘demolition and build’ project in the area.

  • A municipality is working on the transition to a natural gas-free residential area, but first wants to know the questions, concerns and ideas of residents.

Our Urban Detectives are happy to help!

A production for your project requires customization and cooperation. Side by side we are working towards a compact and appealing video that has been approved by all respondents and key stakeholders.

We take control, monitor the planning and advise on the content of the video. You provide area knowledge, substantive documents, contact details and review all sub-products. This comes together in a streamlined process up to the delivery of the end product.

Are you working on a development and are you looking for an innovative way to involve the local residents? We are happy to discuss with you how you can use the Urban Detective for your project. Mail Vince (vince@kickstad.nl) for a (free) consultation or call him on 06-38896922.
